Scribe / Coder
Introducing the Scribe/Coder
In researching our Scribe article for Coding Edge, we became aware of the very direct relationship between the booming field of Scribing and the continuously growing field of coding. Scribes create the records that at some point later, either in the states or off shore are coded by personnel who can have no real time interaction with physicians.
We discussed the feasibility of combining these roles with many highly respected clinicians and coding personnel in the field. The consensus was that a Scribe in the emergency Department who also codes offers the following distinct advantages:
The person who creates the chart has the most complete and intimate knowledge of E&M Services and procedures are rendered Right in Front of Them
The Scribe/Coder has the opportunity to query the physician about all documentation issues in real time. This means no more clinical 99285s down coded to 99284 or 3 due to under documented histories or exams.
The Scribe who understands Critical Care has the real time opportunity to question the physician about CC time before coding.
A Scribe /Coder also present the unique opportunity to code the chart in real time by the person who created the chart.
Real time coding will dramatically decrease billing turn around time with a significant impact on cash flow.
Real time coding also allows hospitals to present a meaningful bill to a patient for Point of Service collections.
SCS would like to have the opportunity to discuss this cutting edge approach to Documentation/Coding with your ED personnel.
